George IV Mahogany & Satinwood Banded Chest
A handsome and fine quality George IV period mahogany chest of drawers of pleasingly small proportions. It features a well-figured mahogany top with satinwood banding and a B-mould edge, above four graduated cock-beaded drawers with satinwood banding to the fronts and floral-impressed brass knob handles, and is raised on elegant turned feet. Bears stamp to the top drawer of the eminent maker/retailer ‘H. Mawer & Stephenson’.
Width 37” (93cm) Depth 20” (51cm) Height 37” (93cm)
About H. Mawer & Stephenson
Despite their name regularly appearing on fine quality examples of Victorian and earlier antique furniture, little is known about the firm H. Mawer & Stephenson. They are recorded as having worked in Lillie Road, Fulham during the latter years of the 19th Century as their name often appears on antique furniture pre-dating this period we can assume they retailed both modern (at the time) and antique furniture, though no one seems to be certain as to whether they were solely retailers or manufacturers as well. There is a famous early photograph of Piccadilly Circus which features a horse-drawn cart bearing the name ‘H Mawer & Stephenson’ prominently in the foreground!
Condition & Details of Restoration
This item is in original structural condition. The polish has been revived, by our own craftsmen, by hand in the traditional manner. . There are some minor old marks under the polish, but nothing serious or unsightly. In our opinion, the photographs are representative.
