George III Plum Painted Pine Chest of Drawers 1780
The George III period pine carcass of large proportions with a fabulous craquelure period vinegar plum painted finish having a typical Georgian arrangement of two short short drawers over three long, with the original brass drop handles and escutcheons to each, the whole sitting on bracket feet.
The condition is lived in and sound. The drawers glide smoothly, the whole proves sturdy and in good original order. The paintwork is simply gorgeous and all natural with a stunning texture and richness of colour through the passing of time. The craqulure present is wonderfully redolent and proves consistent to each side though with more surface wear from the human touch to the top. The bracket feet are all original, with some movement to the front feet though they remain sound. There is only one section of loss, which is the upper moulding to the left flank. The handles appear to be original which is appealing and there is only one with a small amount of loss. We have waxed her to retain the current patina and finish.
The Georgian family that owned this piece of antique furniture would have stained or painted it with the idea of it simulating plum-pudding mahogany and thus make them appear wealthier. Ironic now that this type of paintwork is more prized commercially than a mahogany chest of this period. Very good looking indeed.
