George III Painted Oak & Pine Dresser Base c.1810
The beautiful painted pine and oak carcass having been dry scraped back to reveal the original plum painted finish, distressed commensurate with age, having a two plank English oak top over two frieze drawers, standing on square block kegs, with shaped spandrels, and surviving largely in original condition from the George III period.
The base shows some attractive wear and tear with scuffing and losses commensurate with its age and the process of dry scraping, which is of course the appeal, with the whole in largely original order and with the carcass structurally sound. The stretchers have lovely dipped natural wear to them. The top has been well used with an attractive dry finish and one can see the marks towards the rear where the plate rack would have once stood. The pine linings to the drawers are later replacement and the knobs are later, being a rather quirky configuration of colours, but are Victorian additions so have a nice patination to them in their own right. We have given her a light wax to now protect the paintwork.
This piece is the lower section of a full Georgian kitchen dresser, rather than a stand-alone sideboard, which it now acts as, and its proportions makes it particularly desirable for an entrance hall or lobby. It would have been an important piece of utility antique furniture in the working kitchen of a big property from the early nineteenth century.
A very decorative and attractive piece of original painted period antique furniture.
