George III Mahogany & Inlaid Secrétaire Press/Ches
A nice George III mahogany & rosewood crossbanded secrétaire press featuring stunning flame mahogany veneers, rosewood crossbanding to the secrétaire drawer and large oval crossbanded panels to the doors. Dating to c.1790 and in the Sheraton style it has a rectangular crossbanded and line inlaid top above a deep secrétaire drawer fitted with seven variously sized satinwood and line inlaid drawers with brass drop handles, four pigeon holes and a further 19in wide recess ideal for holding a laptop. The secrétaire drawer front has two realistic faux drawer fronts and drops to provide a generously sized work surface with inset green and gilt tooled leather.
The two panelled doors below opening to reveal a cupboard with three sliding trays, all standing on bracket feet. The original drawer handles have been replaced with brass swan neck handles and there are brass catches to the top and bottom of the left door. There is a key for the drawer lock. Lovely mellow colour, some watermarks and dark marks to the top surface, slight bow to the drawer front, minor losses to beading and crossbanding, the wood has shrunk over the past 200 years causing a split to the left oval veneer and there are old repairs to sides where hinges are. Some ring and ink marks to the interior.
