George III cosh
Those early 19th century streets were mean places. It wasn’t unusual to get an unexpected rap on the noggin and off would go the not so hard earned sovereign or two belonging to the Georgian gentleman. Stop, thief! may have been the cry, but off ran the villainous ragamuffin leaving our fine early 19th century gentleman bruised and a smidgen less well off. With no organised boys in blue what was the Georgian gentleman to do? Well, the cosh was the answer. And this provincial cosh, with a well- patinated malacca shaft, leather ends and a lead rod running within would have done the trick. Slipping into the pocket, it could have been carried easily and pulled out should a highwayman, padfoot or maybe even the pressgang hove into view.
Now it is purely a decorative collector’s piece and should not be carried outside of your home as it would be classed as an offensive weapon. You have been warned. No bopping any padfoots on the noggin, please.
