George II Oak and Burr Elm Chest on Chest c. 1740

1 of 6
A very good country made oak and burr elm chest on chest of small proportions and with a particularly lovely colour and retaining the original locks and brasses.
The drawers have their original solid elm linings, beautiful thickly cut boards with hand held tool marks to the bases and substantial dovetailed joints. All open and close smoothly and offer considerable storage space. The bracket feet are original also. Backboards appear original also and have remnants of the old paper put on in the 19th century to keep dust out.
Some evidence of old worm, small smatterings of holes to the drawer linings and here and there all long since dead and not affecting appearance or structure. The chest has old marks, dings and dents consistent with age and use and a really good, deep and natural patination. Made by a skilled craftsman in c. 1740, incorporating oak and elm timbers, and indicative of a country made piece using local timbers but with lovely refinements in the shaping and burr elm of the bracket feet and the half round applied mouldings.
With lovely proportions, this is a solid usable vernacular English chest of drawers with a beautifully warm colour and deep and well developed natural patina.
Really beautiful with oodles of charm.
Dimensions are:
Width is 30 inches, depth is 18 inches and height is 42 inches.
For metric please multiply by 2.5
I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
