French Spelter Lamp Le Triumphe L. Moreau
We are delighted to offer for sale this large, bronze patinated Spelter figure Table Lamp and frosted Flambeau Shade, which dates from the 1910s. The lamp is after a sculpture by Louis Auguste Moreau (1855-1919) who, together with his brother Hippolyte Francois Moreau, produced spelter figures of their sculptures signed by one or other of the brothers with the mark Salon Beaux Arts or L & F Moreau.
The figure is set upon a naturalistic rocky base and a bow fronted plinth, bearing the title Le Triomphe. The lamp is signed Louis Moreau and Salon Beaux Arts just below the feet of the figure, as shown. The rocky base is black, the plinth and figure are bronzed and the draperies are green/gold coloured.
The lamp depicts the allegorical figure of Victory, modelled as a nude youth with draperies, his arms outstretched, an olive branch in his right hand and the torch that holds the flambeau shade in his left. This figure is often seen simply as a spelter figure except he has two laurel wreaths in his left hand and is otherwise identical.
The lamp has been rewired in black silk covered wire, black plug and an in line switch. As with all electrical items, it is recommended that it be tested by a qualified electrician before use. Also, it is recommended that, when changing the bulb, the base of the torch is supported, to avoid undue stress on the arm. This should apply to all figurine lamps.
Height to top of shade: 35 1/2" - 90.15cm
Max. width: 16 1/2" - 42cm
Max. depth: 9" - 22.8cm
Base: 8" square
Condition: Very good. The shade is in very good condition also, with no damage.
