Made in opulent Amboyna with excellent ormolu mounts.

This is such an opulent bed. It is French and dates to around 1890. The bed, unusually for French beds, takes a standard double mattress. The bed is designed to wow and it does just that. The bed is made in amboyna which is a premium wood from the West Indies and was beloved by top end French bed makers in the nineteenth century. It is incredibly rich looking and the bed is made in the Empire style.The bed is top end quality and would have been aimed at the very wealthy. Look at the turned columns with ormolu capitals. Look at the fantastic ormolu mounts on the headboard the griffins, the classical cartouche. Look at the wonderful inlaid oval in specimen woods and mother of pearl highlights on the foot board. Look at the crossbanded line to each panel. Everything is designed to show off the bed makers craft.
The bed is in good condition. Minor chips to the veneer on the edge but all insignificant. The wood is rich and polished.
The bed splits for transport. You will need to get some slats to run over the side rails to form a base. These are readily available from any builders merchant at little cost.
This is a wonderful quality bed. If you are looking for sheer elegance you won't find anything better.
The headboard is 60.5 inches high and the footboard is 34 inches high. The bed takes a double mattress up to 55 inches wide and 75 inches long. The bed frame itself is 58.5 inches wide and 84 inches long.
