Flemish Antique Brass Chandelier Great Provenance
A wonderful Flemish antique brass two-tier chandelier with great provenance.
Flemish origin in the 17thC taste but made in the 19th Century, circa 1870.
Each tier is designed to accommodate 7 candles, each candle is supported by a shaped bracket and candlesconce with drip pan.
Length/Drop 27" x Diameter 22" (approx)
Provenance:
The chandelier hung until the end of 2017 above the galleried staircase of the grade 2 listed Longley Old Hall, Yorkshire, England.
Longley old hall has its origins in the 13th Century and was the family seat of the Ramsden Family who owned the Manors of Almondbury and Huddersfield from 1590. In the earlier 20th Century the family found an opportunity to rid the family of its turbulent tenantry, selling both these Manors and their estate of some 4,300 acres, to the Huddersfield Corporation in 1920 for the sum of £1.3M, making Huddersfield “the town that bought itself”. The only properties excluded from the sale were Longley Old Hall, "because it was the foundation of the family wealth" and an adjoining cottage. In 1977 Sir Geoffrey Pennington Ramsden, the seventh baronet, sold these properties and broke the last connection between the family and the town.
Simon Jenkins, Former Chairman of The National Trust included Longley Old Hall in his book England’s 1000 Best Houses where he called it an “architectural goldmine”. During the 19th Century, the Hall became the Dower House for the Ramsden family when they built a New Hall further down the hill. This meant that the Old Hall was generally "maintained" rather than re-modelled. The last major re-modelling of the Hall took place in 1870 with the installation of a grand galleried oak staircase, where the chandelier could be seen hanging.
Condition - Good overall. Some old wax droplets are apparent to some of the sconces and brackets as you would expect. The brass is in good order overall.
