Exquisite Small English Regulator Clock
I am delighted to offer for sale this fine and very small regulator longcase clock dating from the last quarter of the 18th Century .
? The architectural style case is made from solid mahogany with a thick oak backboard making it very heavy indeed for its size , which is only 6ft 4 inches in height . The silvered brass engraved dial is only 10 1/2 inches square and the trunk 12 1/2 inches wide. The widest part of the base is 18 inches and the depth 9 inches. As can be seen from the images the proportions are perfect.
? The case has been professionally restored at the workshops of the finest cabinet maker / French polisher I know and the movement restored by a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers.
As a result the case is in first class condition with a lovely shine and a most wonderful colour . A true sign of quality is that the timbers used on the side of the case are almost as good as those used on the front.
? The 8 day duration 5 pillar movement has dead beat escapement and maintaining power . The wheel work is very fine and is in the same superb condition.Please note the very unusual crutch pin method of engaging through a small brass lined circular hole in the wooden pendulum rod.
? The lead filled brass pendulum bob is massive and very heavy and the relatively light brass cased weight have been left original with all patina but can be polished to a high shine at the buyers request.
This is a genuine and original antique clock dating from the end of the 18th Century and from the style and design I would estimate it at circa 1780.
? The name engraved on the dial in capitals is Steward , 406 Strand (London) which relates to a know maker working circa 1860 which initially contradicts my statement above concerning originality.
? This is best explained by quoting Tom Robinson in his definitive book "The Longcase Clock" page 401 paragraph 3 " Regulators became an important part of the furnishings of retail watchmaker and jewellers shops....and were usually inscribed with the names of the proprietors. These changed from time to time so the name on the dial was changed to suit and therefore bear no relationship to that of the maker or the date of manufacture "
This is exactly was has happened to this antique clock and signs of hammering can be seen behind the dial in order to remove the makers name and replace it with Stewards . I have seen this on several regulator antique clocks over the years as it was common practice.
I would urge prospective buyers to visit and view the clock as it is much nicer than the images depict.?
