Exceptional Wall Clock By Barwise, London
John Barwise, London.
A most individual wall clock of exceptional quality by this eminent London maker of the early 19th Century. The A frame eight-day timepiece movement with Harrison's dead-beat escapement and Graham's maintaining power, giving the clock a regulator like time keeping ability, it could possibly be described as an early domestic wall regulator. The nine-inch round silvered dial engraved with black Roman hour numerals, Arabic five-minute numerals,
with a subsidiary seconds dial, blued steel hands and signed Barwise,
London.
The elegantly proportioned case of extrordinary quality is veneered in many different 'specimen' cuts of timber, especially mahogany,(fiddle back, satin, end grain, cross grain, etc.) with the use of burrs, Kingwood and green stained Harewood stringing. The ‘sunburst’ decoration to the arch of the trunk door again made up of specimen woods. The trunk with canted corners, a shaped pediment base and the hood having a shaped top mirroring the bell tops of the bracket clocks of the period. The carcass of the clock is constructed of oak and mahogany timber and is interesting stamped both to the case and hood with matching four digit numbers.
(John Barwise was a third generation clockmaker born in Cockermouth, Cumbria, in 1758. Around 1780 he moved to London where he worked from St. Martin's Lane. He married in 1790 and by 1819 the firm became Barwise & Sons, he died c. 1842).
Height 59", Width 12", Depth 7". Unless otherwise stated all barometer prices include local delivery (50 miles). We deliver personally throughout the country, please contact us for prices excluding delivery or to discuss delivery further than 50 miles.
