Exceptional Small 17thC West Country Chest Coffer
A rare late 17thC West Country elm joined front plank coffer with exceptional colour and patina of desirable small proportions.
In remarkable condition and standing at full original height it is a superb looking piece. With wonderfully figured timber throughout, traditional dowel and nail construction and regional lozenge and lunette carving. The shaped and cross cut feet with gentle chamfer being a particularly feature.
Chests of this rare type are interesting as they combine the sophistication of the joined paneled chest with the primitive country simplicity of the six plank chest. Rather than being a transitional form it represents a compromise most likely dictated by the original owners budget.
With superb proportions and with just the right amount of original carving allowing the figure of the timber to show it presents itself perfectly.
With just a small amount of historic worm holes and 18thC replaced hinged and two small historic repairs to the top it is in remarkable condition.
One of the best chests we have seen.
Length 3ft 6.5" = 108cm Length of Lid 3ft 10" = 117cm Height 25.5" = 65cm Depth 17" = 43cm
