Elizabethan Oak Sword Chest

1 of 6
A very fine example of an Elizabethan oak sword chest dating to the late 16th century standing on shaped end supports. The front and back boards extend beyond the body of the chest. The ends of the boards are chip carved with moulding to the top and bottom of the front board and also lid. This extends onto the back boards which is a feature not seen too often as the back would not be normally be seen. The colour of the oak is truly exquisite, the very best in early English oak with a delicious patination. There is an old split along the top, probably contemporary with the nailing on of the hinges and hasp at the time of construction which is of no structural significance. The hasp has long since gone and the lockplate is later.
The depth of colour and patination make sure this a truly magnificent Elizabethan boarded chest.
Depth of colour is always notoriously difficult to capture in photo shoots -a photo in daylight has been included at the bottom which hints at the nutty brown colour which is most desirable in early oak.
Measuring 53" long, 13 3/4" deep, 24" high.
