Early Victorian Black Painted Pine Trunk c.1850

1 of 6
The black painted pine travelling trunk having a fitted candle box and newspaper lined interior, the first layer of paper dating to 1866, the second to 1914, the trunk with it’s original strap work iron hinges and lock, with remnants of a Great Western Railway label for Paddington Station to one side, surviving from the middle of the nineteenth century.
This chunky and well-made trunk has some obvious signs of use there are old scratches and the paintwork has naturally distressed in the appropriate areas, mainly to the bottom front section where she will have been kicked. There are small sections of edgings missing. The pieces iron swing handles are lacking with just some remnants remaining to each side, but it is clearly a well-loved, well-travelled, versatile and essential item of Victorian times. The paper interior is interesting and has at least two layers dating 48 years apart.
Trunks date back to pre-medieval times and were made in a large variety of shapes and sizes and from many different materials. Candle boxes within them have been in use since the same period and with this trunk displaying railway labels it’s clear she was used to travel with for a period.
A very decorative and useful piece of affordable period antique furniture which could now be used in any number of ways.
