Early Eighteenth century double gate gateleg table
his is such a good and unusual dining table. It dates to the early part of the eighteenth century, around 1720 or so. It is as untouched a period table as I have seen. The feet, which always needs to be replaced are, on this table completely original. The end plank (usually the tip) is always being replaced, but not here. It has the same wood it was made with.
It is a very unusual table in that it has double supporting gates for each leaf. Usually you just get one gate on each side. I think this is because the oak is so deep and heavy on this table and this is another reason why it has survived so well.
The table has elongated baluster supports to each end. These are beautifully turned. It also has a deep shaped frieze to each end.
The patina of the table is wonderful, replete with all the marks you would expect on a three hundred year old table. See photos. Interestingly there are two initials put on with a punch on one leaf. These are probate marks possibly from the eighteenth century to denote ownership. I have photographed them.
I love period oak like this. Period antique tables as good as this used to be an absolute fortune and I don't think it will be long before the market is back for good examples like this.
This is a solid and elegant table which will seat eight when fully open and yet closes up and can sit against a wall taking up little room. Good thing.
The table is 28.5 inches high and 48 inches long. It is 20 inches deep with no leaves up. It is 42 inches deep with one leaf up and is 63 inches deep with both leaves up.
