Early 19thC French pattern briquet - cutlas
Briquet or cutlass of the type used extensively by Napoleon's forces. This one has seen considerable use and the blade, which measures something under 60cm, in addition to age related rust pitting, bears the signs of having been sharpened on a grinding wheel or suchlike. None of the normal French armourers' marks but a five pointed star motif stamped on guard as well as an M on the extreme upper part of blade - these possibly indicating that it was manufactured and or used elsewhere. We await expertise on this if anyone has it. Whatever its origins a genuine 200 plus year old piece of weaponry with Napoleonic War associations.
