Early 19 century Indian Tulwar.

1 of 6
The Tulwar, is a type of curved sword or sabre from the Indian subcontinent.
This is a fine example of an early Indian Tulwar with heavy curved, flexible steel blade. The hilt is intricately covered in gold engravings. A much higher quality sword than the average Tulwar.
This type of hilt also had a practical function other than protecting the hand. The pommel spike would allow the user to strike an opponent in close-quarters combat where the blade was not usable. Since these were often spiked or rounded off, they had the potential to cause damage. Hilts (as you can see above) were often decorated or inlaid with gold or silver. This was primarily done for decorative purposes but also to prevent rust build upon the hilt.
