Domestic Regulator Longcase Clock by Fladgate
A fine timepiece regulator longcase by Fladgate, London, dating from the 1790s. The superior quality 8 day, six pillar movement has a dead-beat escapement and bolt and shutter maintaining power.
When a cord situated behind the trunk door is pulled, the maintaining power is activated, and a shutter opens to reveal the winding hole.
Heavy brass pendulum bob, and polished brass-cased weight.
The case has beautifully figured flame mahogany veneers, the hood with broken pediment and surmounted with a wooden urn finial. The base has a panel of matched veneers, raised on a decorative shaped apron plinth.
The 10-inch square silvered dial has Roman numerals and Arabic minutes, subsidiary seconds dial.
Original matching blued steel hands.
John Fladgate is recorded as working in Conduit Street, London. He was apprenticed in 1743 and died 1781. For a period up to 1775 he was in partnership with Richard Wilder as Fladgate & Wilder. The business was carried on by his widow to 1793. As this antique clock bears only the surname, we would surmise that it is from this latter period.
Height 200cm
