Colin Gibson Irish Pen & Wash St. Mark's Sq.Venice
This quite unusual painting is executed in pen and atercolour wash by the Northern Irish artist Colin Gibson. It is a view of St. Mark's Square (San Marco) in Venice looking at the front of St. Mark's Basilica, with the corner of the Doge's Palace to the right. We found he had previously executed a work of an Irish Harbour in similar medium and technique. Although the painting is unsigned, it bears the label of a prestigious Art Gallery in Belfast that dealt solely with the works of Irish artists.
Colin Gibson was born in Belfast in 1948. His artistic career began at an early age, when he joined the graphic design studio of the Belfast Telegraph in 1964, where he remained for the next nine years.
He turned professional in 1974 and has had a number of one man exhibitions, the first at the age of 20. Although the vast majority of his painting draw on the scenery of Ireland for their subject matter, he has obviously travelled widely, including scenes of Italy, America and Scotland amongst his works. Some of his architectural studies are available in print form, although he mainly works in oils.
There are 7 of his paintings in the National Collection, held in Ireland and to view these, please visit artuk.org. His auction records, of which there are many may be viewed at arcadja.com (220 listings), artprice.com (60) and findartinfo.com (82).
The painting is framed in its original gilt metal frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 21 3/4" x 16 1/4" - 55.25cm x 41.25cm
Frame size: 28 3/4" x 23 3/4" - 73cm x 60.3cm
Condition: Very good. The painting and mount are in very good condition. The frame has some minor wear consistent with use.
