Charles Vaughan Longcase Clock
The Vaughan family were a family of well known antique clock makers in Pontypool.
Charles Vaughan, was the most prolific maker, his antique clocks date from 1742 to 1796,
An average clockmaker of that time could make about 20 clocks a year.
This brass clock face bears the signature of Charles Vaughan Pont Pool.
It was a legal requirment at the time that a clock face shoudl bear the name of the maker and the place of manufacture. (Pont Pool was a farily common reference, Pont y Pool being a later and now common usage)
Dr William Linnard wrote a detailed of Charles Vaughan of Pontypool in 2005.
An important work on the early clock makers of South Wales.
When we aquired this antique clock, we did not at first realise that it is, in fact, the one and the same on the front cover of the book.
The clock face and movement were placed at a later date in a later pine 18th century case,
191cms high x 24cms deep ((Hood) x 39cms wide (base)
