This is a super quality and primitive Charles II English antique oak panel coffer attributable to the county of Somerset, England, circa 1650 – 1700. This coffer is has sought after proportions. The front of the coffer features stunning top quality carvings similar to Norman arches on two levels, which was similar to those found in the churches and cathedrals in the South West of England. This coffer would have been commissioned for a wealthy client in the South West, as Bristol was a busy trading port at this time. The coffer features a lovely two-plank top with carved inset panels to the front and inset panels to the side. The coffer features a peg construction method. The lid is connected to the base with hand beaten iron hinges. Inside, there is the original candle box to the right hand side. There is also a working lock and key with this coffer which locks the top lid onto the base. The coffer sits on its original style feet, which is rare to see. The back of the coffer features the original rough-hewn back and original floor.
The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The exterior of the coffer boasts a stunning rich oak colour patination. This is an important oak coffer having been around in the days of Charles II, Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland & Scotland and the Great Fire of London. The coffer would be ideal as a storage box in a bedroom in front of a bed.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom in front of a bed. It has a beautiful deep rich oak patina, which has been generated by the centuries of cleaning and care it has received.
Condition Report
The frame of the coffer is original featuring the original floor, top, sides and back. The coffer stands on the original style feet, which is very rare to see. The working lock and key are very old replacements. Likewise, the iron hand beaten hinges are very old replacements, possibly George 1st period. There has been a very old repair to right hand tip of the top a long time ago. This old repair is sold in joint and the lid opens freely. There are no splits to the tops sides or bottom of the coffer. The interior is clean, dry and the coffer is practical and useable. The coffer is free of active woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use. Considering the age of this early coffer, it is in very good condition and does not detract from its attractive appeal.
