Blunderbuss by J. Rigby, Dublin

![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
A fine brass barrelled blunderbuss stamped "J. Rigby Dublin" on top of the barrel and the mechanism. It dates from circa 1800 and has a barrel length of 16" (41 cm). It has a brass trigger guard and brass shoulder pad. Overall length of the gun is 3" (79 cm)
John Rigby & Co (Gunmakers) Ltd was founded by John Rigby in Dublin in 1775. Surviving business ledgers from 1781 show that John Rigby was already making, under his own name, shotguns, rifles, muskets, carbines, blunderbusses and pistols to clients specifications.
His grandson, also John, took over the business in 1858 and, capitalising on the awards his family guns had earned at The Great Exhibition (1851) and the Paris Exhibition (1855) opened a London branch in 1865 in St James's Street. Like his grandfather, John Rigby was a top shot and helped form the Irish national shooting team. He was Irish Champion three times. One of Rigby's .451 calibre muzzleloader rifles was presented to Lt Col. George A Custer. All items are sold with a 14 day money back guarantee. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with your purchase, we will gladly issue a refund (excluding carriage costs). The item must be returned in the same condition as it left us. The refund will be issued on the item's return to our premises.
