Black Slate & Marble Mantle Clock by Brocot c1875
An elegantly proportioned, quality Victorian black slate and marble mantle antique clock by Brocot and retailed by Cromey & Son of Bristol, c1875. Its case is of polished black slate with black-veined, burgundy marble detail to front corners. White enamelled dial with black Roman numerals and blued-steel shaped hands. Gilt inner bezel with beaded outer surround to the bevelled glass dial cover. The dial is signed Cromey & Son Bristol. A twin-train 8-day movement with Brocot pendulum adjustment – striking the hours and half-hour on a bell. Serial number 6036 stamped throughout including backplate, bezel and pendulum – all original. ‘AB’ stamped on bezel and (in a five-pointed star) on the backplate. The clock measures 20 cm in height and 18.5 cm width and (max overall) 12 cm in depth.
Excellent timekeeper. Fully cleaned and serviced but retaining its antique patina. The clock's movement is covered by our 12 month warranty in the UK. Watch a brief video of it striking on our website (link on our dealer page).
This clock is in excellent condition commensurate with age. No damage or repairs to the slate and marble. Minute 'fleabites' to the plinth which are not easily visible to the eye. No damage to the pristine dial and glass cover. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.
Achilles Brocot (1817-1878) worked in Paris as a clockmaker producing both “blank” movements for use in antique clocks as well as complete mantle and carriage antique clocks. A well-known maker, he developed the Brocot suspension adjustment as well as the exposed escapement. His trademark was AB within a five-pointed star. William Cromey is listed as a goldsmiths and clockmaker – operating in Bristol from 1845 until 1891. He traded as Cromey and Son from 1873. Viewing welcomed - please contact us in advance.
