Automaton Longcase Grandfather Clock
Offered for sale is a very rare automaton rocking eyes longcase with moon phase by Caleb Pitt of Frome , Somerset which dates circa 1780 . The Pitt dynasty of Clockmakers including Edward and Thomas worked in Frome from the middle of the 18th to approximately 1800. Judging from this particular antique clock Caleb Pitt was a very fine maker capable of producing complicated and attractive antique clocks of the highest quality.
The 12 inch arched brass chapter ring and spandrel dial has a well engraved and matted centre with a large date aperture above 6 o'clock and a dial below 12 o'clock showing phases and date of the moon. In the arch is the very interesting feature of a painted moon which has painted wooden eyes which move left and right as the pendulum swings. The eyes themselves have glass like pupils which are very realistic.
The 8 day duration weight driven movement is of excellent quality and is in perfect working order having been professionally serviced.
The flame mahogany case has a wavey hood and trunk door with a similar panel applied panel to the base , which is typical of the finest West Country cases . The hood has barley twist pillars surmounted by Corinthian capitals . At this time Bristol and surrounding areas became very wealthy due to the trading routes and there was a ready market from clients who could afford the very best items resulting in some exceptional clocks being made regardless of cost.
As can seen in photographs this clock is in superb condition throughout and will delight the most discerning buyer. Interested parties are encouraged to view the clock as it is actually better in the flesh
