This is an Antique Arts & Crafts Solid Oak Scottish School bureau c1885-1905. Raised on turned and tapered legs with knops to the base they are very very much in the style of William Birch for Liberty. It has a double rail stretcher to the base wtih a single drawer above which when opened is the support for the bureau flap. The lock is original but the key is a replacement that workss perfectly. The over hang to the sides just above the drawer echo the Scottish school exageration of cornices and tops at this point that were extolled by C.R. Macintosh. The upper back has shaped and upside down hearts echoing againg the Scottish school at this point being so prevalent to design. The interior felt is new with pigeon holes to the back. There are ink stains but dont detract. An awesome piece.
