A wonderful and most unusual cast iron and beautifully gilded lectern depicting Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749–1832) and Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805), who are probably the two most revered figures in German literature. In the centre is a Lyre shrouded in a foliate garland and below a pair of Theatrical Face Masks.

The shelf itself is wooden and a metal sprung arm attached to hold the book or sheet music in place. The back has a full mark for E.G. Zimmermann of Hanau, Germany.

Excellent condition with a wonderful natural antique patina. The overall measurement being 11" x 10", the figural panel (shelf upwards) measuring 8 1/2" x 10" (max). Victorian in era, dating to around 1880 / 1890.
