Description:
This is a fine quality antique English late 17th century oak coffer, with a triple panel front, featuring its original carvings, circa 1680, in good condition. The oak coffer features a moulded three panel top and joined section below, which is constructed with butt joints, secured by pegs. The lid opens on the original iron loop hinges, to reveal a spacious clean and dry interior. 17th century oak coffer features an old steel working lock with key and decorative brass star shaped key escutcheon. The three panels are decorated with the original carvings, featuring lozenge shaped panels, with decorative floral petal carvings centres and scratch carved border visible to the stiles and rails across the frame of the coffer. The 17th century oak coffer retains its original inset side panels along with standing on the original stiles (feet), which also boast inset scribe carving along the entire length. The back of the coffer retains its original rough-hewn panels along with the original floor. Overall, this oak chest boasts a stunning rich colour and patination.
This 17th century oak coffer would look great in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom as an ottoman at the foot of the bed. It would fit into either a traditional or contemporary setting and is a real statement piece.
As the oak chest boasts its original patination, it displays a fantastic colour which can only be achieved through the years of care and cleaning it has received.
Condition Report:
This is a fine quality antique English late 17th century oak coffer, with a triple panel front, featuring its original carvings, circa 1680, in good condition. The oak coffer has been cleaned and wax-polished, to a professional standard in our workshop. Nominal old marks to the top (see photos) and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. Such old use marks are inevitable and perfectly acceptable due to its age and use it would have received. The interior is clean, dry, and usable. The coffer retains its original lid, floor, sides and back. The coffer features an old replacement working lock with key. We believe the iron strap hinges are original. The 17th century oak coffer stands on the original stiles (feet) and the carvings to the front rail, panels & stiles are also original. The oak coffer is solid in joint it does not wobble on the floor and is ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in good condition. It is rare to find a coffer of this period of such quality and in this clean condition.
