Antique Chiming longcase Clock, on tubular gongs
A fine example of an original Edwardian chiming grandfather antique clock in a solid oak case with fine barley twist columns and blind fretwork, dated c.1910.
The fabulous quality German movement was top of the range of its day, having every adjustment you could possibly hope for. It has dead beat pallets, beat adjustment, maintaining power, and plays a choice of either Westminster or Whittington Chimes on a series of eight tubular gongs and strikes the hour on a large tubular gong. The clock has an unusual method of dampening the hammer vibration following striking. We have not come across this method before, but it is highly effective, giving a lovely tone.
The full-length beveled edge glass door shows the nickel-plated weights, pendulum and polished tubular gongs.
The highly unusual arch dial has fine silver-plated decoration, with gilt Arabic numerals set within an engraved minute track, chime/silent and chime selection dials in the arch and a subsidiary seconds indication dial.
Matching steel hands.
The movement has an oval with the letters HWN, and "MADE IN GERMANY". These letters are also displayed on the very bottom edge of the dial. HWN was the trademark for the HAWINA Clock Company ,a company founded by Hans Winterhalder with 800 employees devoted purely to the exportation of Winterhalder antique clocks to England, Russia and America during the first decade of the 20th century.
