A Superb Gillows Linen Press
A superb Gillows Linen Press. In dense Cuban mahogany and retaining its original handles, feet and trays and with a very good colour and patina. 1910mm high, 1260mm wide and 620mm deep. Circa 1798.
An almost identical Linen Press is illustrated on page 66 in Volume II of Susan E Stuart's "Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840" and was made by the Journeyman Wm Stubbs for Robert Phillips Esq, a successful textile merchant. No signature has been found on this piece but it is possible that Wm Stubbs also made this Linen Press.
