A Rare London Longcase Clock with Moonphase
Thomas Hackney - London
An excellent and rare example featuring Moonphase and Centre seconds.
The high quality 8 day duration 5 pillar movement striking the hours on a bell. The 12" arched brass dial has a separate silvered brass chapter ring, a fine matted centre, square date aperture and an unusual sunken cartouche elaborately engraved with the makers name Thomas Hackney, London. The dial also displays finely made blued steel hour and minute hands and a large blued steel seconds hand. The spandrels to the corners are of the Urn shaped pattern. To the arch you will find a moonphase mechanism, a rare find in London at any period. The moonphase is decorated with a deep blue background and multiple gold stars of varying sizes.
The elegant case of excellent proportions features high quality flame mahogany veneer to both the trunk door and base. The latter with a raised rectangular panel and a double plinth standing on two mahogany pads. The hood has typical brass inlaid reeded pillars with brass Doric capitals, quarter pillars to the rear, inspection windows to the side and a plain broken arched top.
Note: This is a rare example of an early London mahogany longcase clock. At this period the London Cabinet Makers were still producing walnut veneered longcase antique clocks. But as a newly discovered desirable wood, mahogany was becoming far more popular and eventually it was used extensively in Britain by Furniture Makers. The trunk door veneer on this antique clock is of the highest quality and is also laid onto a solid piece of mahogany. Thomas Hackney is listed as working before 1764 and as Watchmaker.
Height: 7'6" / C.1755
