A rare Irish bog oak Canterbury
Raised on turned legs with brass castors above which is a single drawer with wooden knobs. The "boat shaped" upper section has faux bamboo turned divisions and is topped with finials. In good and very original condition. 600mm high, 520mm wide and 450mm deep. Circa 1840.
N.B. Bog-oak, also known as abonos and morta, is a material from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained brown by tannins dissolved in the acidic water. Bog-wood represents the early stages in the fossilisation of wood, with further stages ultimately forming jet, lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years. W J Gravener Antiques is a family owned business, started in 1963 by William who was joined by son, Mark in 1981 and continues today with the same ethos of dealing in fine quality English and Continental furniture, mirrors and decorative objects, from the 18th & 19th centuries. Now under the stewardship of Mark and his wife, Louise, we take pride in maintaining the high standards which William set more than 50 years ago.
W.J.Gravener Antiques are proud members of LAPADA, The London and Provincial Antique Dealers Association.
We offer an approachable and friendly service and we are always happy to hear from clients, both new and established.
