Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English Regency small double four-poster bed, circa 1820, in good condition. The bed will fit a 4ft 6” wide by 6ft 3” long mattress if the slats are raised. With the slats at the current height, the bed will fit a mattress 4ft wide by 6ft 1” long. We can supply custom size luxury quality mattresses. Please see section below titled “Raising The Slats” for further information. The bed incorporates a protruding cornice, featuring reeded detail with oak panels, raised upon four tapering reeded posts decorated with acanthus leaves. The intricately carved headboard incorporates floral and beaded and gadroon carvings, as well as a central tableau, depicting a pair of doves with a flaming torch and bow & arrows. The bed frame is decorated with cock-beaded panels to the side rails and footboard. The bed is raised on sturdy square legs, which incorporate oak and mahogany fielded panels (these cover the bolts which hold the bed together and boast brass ring handles on foliate escutcheons). The bed is raised on tapering legs terminating on spade feet. The superstructure lends itself to being dressed with romantic fabric drapes.

Retaining the original polish and patination, the bed boasts a rich dark red brown colour, with a mid satin French polish finish.

This bed would look stunning in either a contemporary or traditional setting. It dismantles for easy transportation and we can provide luxury quality custom mattresses. This is a superior quality centrepiece for any bedroom.

Condition Report:
This bed is in good condition, which is commensurate with its age. Some nominal old use marks to the leading edges and polish, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. This bed, which retains the original polish and patination, boasts a rich dark brown colour, with a light French polish finish. It is extremely difficult to replicate this colour and patination with antique furniture that has been re-polished. The bed is constructed of solid mahogany with oak panels. The bed is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.

Raising the Slats:
The slats have been lowered on this bed to the bottom of the side rails (as seen in the pictures) so that you can see more of the headboard carvings when using a modern 12” depth mattress on the bed (the original Georgian mattresses would have only been 2” – 3” deep). Also, it makes it easier to get in and out of bed with a mattress that sits lower down. The slats have been lowered by around 5” in height from their original position. This means that the maximum width of mattress that can currently be used is 4ft 2” wide by 6ft 1” long long (if the slats are kept at their lowered position).

However, you can also fit a bigger mattress on the bed (4ft 6” wide by 6ft 3” long). In order to do this, the slats would need to be raised in height to the top of the side rails (we can undertake this work free of charge). By raising the slats, it allows you to use a wider mattress on the bed, as the mattress can straddle the side rails and footboard. In order for this size mattress to fit, we would need to supply a custom made mattress with the corners removed, so that the mattress fits correctly in between the posts. It is advised that a custom size mattress is supplied, as this will fit the bed frame more closely and maximise the mattress space. The actual dimensions of the custom mattress will depend on whether the slats are kept lowered, or raised.

Mattresses:
Because these beds are individually unique and do not always conform to modern mattress dimensions, we also supply a range of customised high quality mattresses for these beds starting from £450. Our mattresses are constructed of natural materials (silk, wool & cashmere) and are handmade in the UK. The mattresses can have the corners removed so to maximise the mattress fit in the super-structure of bed. The price quoted does not include the mattress. Please enquire for a mattress quote.

Draping Service
We offer a separate draping service whereby we can dress the bed with any fabric of choice. This service can consist of the basic fabric being wrapped around the canopy, to hanging curtains or, providing a dressed solid roof with hung curtains. Apart from the superior style and presence, this four-poster bed had a practical purpose. The bed would have originally been decorated with a light muslin cotton material to prevent the mosquitoes from biting the occupants in bed. The advertised price does not include drapes. Please contact us for a quote.
