3 Pint Brass Water Jug, J. Sankey, c.1890-1920
Here we have a fine late 19th / early 20th century 3 pint brass jug by Joseph Sankey & Sons of Bilston in the West Midlands. The jug is conical in form opening out at the top for the lip and the attachment of the handle. Originally designed as water jugs for wash stands, today they are frequently used as vases and they certainly look great when filled with flowers.
Joseph Sankey & Sons were a hugely successful company based in Bilston, near Wolverhampton. Founded by Joseph Sankey in the early 1860s, they became Joseph Sankey & Sons around 1890 and this coincided with their move into decorative household items, of which their water jugs are the best known examples. They continued with these up until the start of World War One when production inevitably switched to the war effort. Between the wars and after they concentrated on industrial parts and commercial orders and sold off their remaining decorative stock.
Condition of the jug is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug has a 3 pint capacity, is 14cm / 5.5" in diameter across the base and stands 26.3cm / 10.25" high to the top rim. It weighs 465g / 16.4oz.
It is marked on the base of the jug with JS&SB for Joseph Sankey & Sons, Bilston and stamped 3 to indicate that it is the 3 pint size.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Hermes Tracked & Signed Courier.
