2 x ex Woolworths shop opaline lights
2 rare items, ex ceiling lights from a branch of Woolworths.
White enamel top section and below, suspended by chains a globe shade held within a metal hoop and retaining its original wire basket.
Originally these lights would have been illuminated by gas and they still retain their fittings to the top. Either side of the lamp and hanging down is the pull chain for turning the gas supply on/off. Previously they have been adapted to electric. The wiring has been removed for safety considerations and both lamps will require recommissioning by a professional electrician.
As for age we can only make an educated guess. We have sourced an interior image dated 1949 of a Woolworths branch which clearly shows several of the lamps in situ. Taking into consideration the originality of gas supply they must be a least 100 years old, if not older.
In good used condition. Evidence of previous use, frits to enamel, one lamp has rubbing to plated globe ring.
A rare opportunity to purchase a little piece of history from a fondly remembered high street favourite.
