Label verso " John Gutteridge Sykes, landscape and marine painter, studied Sheffield school of art, born 1866,exhibited from 1895 - 1936. Lived Hillsborough Sheffield, also Newlyn Penzance from 1915. Exhibited with Glasgow Institute of fine art, Walker Gallery Liverpool Royal Academy, Royal institute of painter in watercolours."
