19th C.Kutani Porcelain Table Lamp & Pleated Shade

1 of 6
We are offering for sale this lovely 19th Century Porcelain Japanese Saiko-Kutani Oil Lamp, previously converted into a Table Lamp, with pleated Shade.
Kutani ware (九谷焼, Kutani-yaki) is a style of Japanese porcelain traditionally supposed to be from Kutani, now a part of Kaga, Ishikawa, in the former Kaga Province. It is divided into two phases: Ko-Kutani (old Kutani), from the 17th and early 18th centuries, and Saikō-Kutani from the revived production in the 19th century. The more prestigious Ko-Kutani wares are recognised by scholars to be a complex and much mis-represented group, very often not from Kutani at all.
The base is of cylindrical form and is decorated with two panels depicting landscapes and gilded multiple figures on the front and reverse. The panels are surrounded by an almost geometric pattern of chrysanthemums. It has on ornate brass cap rising up to the lampholder, with a rim of vine leaves and grapes around the porcelain, with a substantial and ornate pierced Victorian brass base.
The pleated shade is in fully lined, oyster coloured faux silk and tones well with the lamp base.
The lamp has been completely rewired with pale gold coloured braided fabric covered flex, and has a new safer switched lampholder, shade carrier and plug. As with all electrical items it is recommended that it be checked by a qualified electrician before use.
Height to top of shade: 27 1/2 inches - 69.85cm
Diameter of shade: 18 inches - 45.75cm
Diameter of base: 7 3/4 inches - 19.75cm
Condition: Very good. There is no damage to the base, other than very slight wear to the gilding in the middle of the base, due to handling. The shade is new.
