19th Century Yew, Elm and Ash Windsor Chair c.1850
A most attractive and unusual Windsor chair made of yew wood, elm and ash and with wonderful colour and in superb original condition.
Traditionally the saddle seats were made in elm because elm trees grow to such a size and girth that a wide and deep seat can be made from a single board. Ash is pliable, it can be steamed and bent to form hooped backs and arms, and easily turned to form legs and supports. The chairs could be partly made where the wood was felled and dried, on simple lathes working hand sawn timbers.
Much of this chair is made in elm – not just the seat but the bow arm and fine splat, with an ash hoop and spindles. The turned arm supports, legs and stretchers are in solid yew wood with lovely dark burred surface and this very dense, strong wood with so much character and colour.
A superb chair, very solid and capacious, all original.
Dimensions are:
20.5 inches wide, 21 inches deep and 43.25 inches high.
Floor to seat is 15.5 inches.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
