19th century three tier Korean elm cabinet
A highly decorative 19th century three tier Korean elm cabinet with brass decoration and of superb patina (colour).
The cabinet consists of an arrangement of various drawers, cupboards and recessed panels, the cabinet having an elm top with moulded edge with applied pierced brass decoration to the corners leading down to four small drawers all with brass handles and applied brass decoration.
This leads down to a cupboard with two doors, the doors being secured by circular brass lock plate and having brass hinges and brass bird and floral applied decoration, the interior having one shelf, the two recessed panels to either side also with applied brass bird and floral decoration.
Below are four small recessed panels with applied brass floral decoration with cupboard below with 2 doors with the identical decoration as before, the interior having one shelf and also with recessed panels to the side.
This leads down to four small recessed panels with applied brass floral decoration with a pair of cupboards below, each having two doors with shaped and pierced lock plates and pierced brass hinges with swastika symbols, the interior having an arrangement of small drawers with further recessed panels below leading down to a moulded edge.
The cabinet is supported by a shaped frieze to the front, sides and back with shaped feet and applied brass pierced swastika decoration, the ends and back being panelled.
The swastika has been an important symbol for Hindus and Buddhists in some Asian countries for thousands of years and can be depicted in both the negative and positive position. The word 'swastika' is a Sanskrit (ancient Indian language in which Hindu scriptures and Indian poems are written) word meaning: 'well being', 'good existence' , 'good luck'. In Buddhism the swastika is the symbol of good fortune, abundance and eternity and is said to promote goodwill, compassion and generosity to all living beings.
This cabinet is highly decorative, it is in excellent condition, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home and is a very versatile piece.
