19th Century Solid Brass Green Man Urn / Planter
Here we have the perfect small urn or planter for the mid-winter season. Made from solid brass, it features the face of the Green Man on each side surrounded by mistletoe whilst the base is decorated with oak leaves and the scroll shaped handles are topped with a flower.
The character of the Green Man, usually symbolising the fertility and rebirth of nature with the changing of the seasons, is found in many countries and dates back at least 2000 years, probably more. In Britain it was revived in the second half of the 19th century in both the Gothic revival and the Arts & Crafts movement and today also has an environmental symbolism.
This brass urn or planter is superbly modelled with great detail in the design. We feel it has more of a Gothic feel than an Arts & Crafts one but it could have come from either movement.
The planter stands 14.5cm / 5.7ins high, is 14.5cm / 5.7ins from handle to handle and 9cm / 3.5ins in diameter across the top. Being solid brass it is very hefty and weighs in at 874g / 30.8oz.
It would look stunning with perhaps a small poinsettia or other winter plant in it.
Shipping in the UK is £8 by Hermes Tracked & Signed Courier.
