19th Century Brass Log Bucket Or Jardiniere.
A superb mid 19th century brass fireside log bucket, a wine bottle holder, or a jardiniere. To my knowledge this has been both a log bucket and a plant jardiniere in its life. However it has a scene of two people carrying a bunch of grapes and a tub of apples, which leads me to believe it may have started life as a wine cistern, which also held ice to keep the bottles cool.
On the other side to the grapes is a coat of arms, with a lion and a unicorn either side of a shield, and holding aloft a five pointed coronet on an armour helmet.
Either side is a lion mask with brass circular handles.
A large piece which would hold a lot of logs, a large plant or more importantly many bottles of wine. The top is 15 inches or 38 cms in diameter and it stands 12.5 inches or 32 cms tall.
It weighs 4.45 Kg.
It is in good but used condition. There are minor dings as would be expected, but nothing Which detracts from it. One of the circular handles has a solder repair which can be hidden in the lion mask. Unseen on the base is another old solder repair around the foot, where I suspect it leaked at some time. I have tested it and it does not leak now.
UK delivery Is £35.00 The purchaser can arrange their own courier or collect it from Stamford on the A1 or Leicester.
