1880s Rare Porcelain Lighthouse Clock
This very decorative 'lighthouse' antique clock dating from 1888 has a finely painted porcelain base with a cream brick ground, with finely painted gilt highlighted floral and foliate vine detail, painted by Wilmot Brown, one of the Doulton artists.
The design is based on the well-known lighthouse antique clocks being made by Guilmet in the period the silvered top part sits above a gilt brass support and pierced gallery, identical to the Guilmet clocks other than it rotates freely within the base rather than being driven by clockwork. It houses a timepiece clock on one side, two spirit thermometers and an aneroid barometer.
The bronzed top bears the initial AW, and is dated 1888.
The base carries Wilmot Browns signature.
The 8-day clock has a cylinder platform escapement, and is numbered 2957. The dial has a Roman and Arabic silvered chapter ring with outside minute track and gilt centre, behind a hinged and glazed door. There is a regulation slot above the XII.
Matching blued steel hands.
The aneroid barometer has scale of 27-31 inches, the glazed bezel fitted with a star-shaped pointer knob.
Height 17 inches (43cms)
To be overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
