17th Century William and Mary Leather Chest

Late 17th century 1680- 1700 , lovely deeply patinated leather exterior , created through centuries of polishing , handling and use , unpolished original patinated exterior metalwork, the interior still retaining its marbled lined paper .
Brass studded design stylised floral and swirled design with stylised grapes to the front panel, the original owners initials R G to the top.
Of handmade nailed construction , the bottom with front to back boards nailed up into the front and back. Underneath the bottom, along the front, back and sides the original battens forming a sledge to protect the chest during transportation , slightly curved lid originally designed to let rain water run off during transportation

During the 17th century these chests were designed for the storage and transportation of treasured goods by stagecoach such as clothing, medical stores , books , musical instruments etc . Covered in high quality leather , making the chest water resistant . The decorative brass studs used for identification purposes with many carrying initials showing the high status of their owner .
