17th Century Paneled and Carved Oak Coffer
This is an exceptional 17th Century 3 paneled coffer, of rare small size and with carving of the highest quality.
The front of the coffer has a deep top rail with both a line of crisply incised arcading and a band of guilloche work detail beneath. This carved design of intertwined ribbons continues down each of the 4 vertical frame members of the coffer front. The bottom rail has channels of gadrooned decoration which is repeated along the inner edges of the styles
The 3 small panels have been inlaid with diamonds of contrasting wood segments - walnut and bog oak.
The outer styles would have been longer originally, lifting the coffer higher off the ground but these have worn down over the years and trimmed flat.
The top, also of 3 paneled construction is completely original. The frame has deep channel and groove carved decoration. The hinges have been replaced several times and now have forged iron loop hinges again, sound and in good working order.
Inside, the coffer retains worn old newspaper and blue paper linings, and there are grooves to the right hand side where a candlebox would have once been fitted.
The whole piece has superb patina and colour throughout.
Old repairs:
There are 2 old frame repairs on the underside of the top around the middle panel. These are historic and completely sound. See photo of inside of lid.
There are some very old iron clout nails in notches cut to the inside edges of the styles underneath the base. (see photo) These look as if they were for fixing batons to reinforce the base boards, again historic.
