17th Century Oak Side Table. Lowboy
This is a fine and rare early English Oak Side table.
It dates to the 17th Century, William and Mary Period, about 1690 and is a notable early example of a 3 drawer table design that came to be known as a Lowboy.
It has its original 2 plank top with a wide overhang. Constructed from thin, hand sawn oak.
Beautifully turned 'cup and cover' legs which extend through the stretchers and are locked in place by hollowed out turned 'cup' feet.
The curved flat cross stretchers are finely crafted from 2 thin hand sawn sections of oak jointed in the centre and topped by a finial. Having survived undamaged for so long these joints have now been supported with timber sections underneath.
The apron has a central stepped arch with 2 smaller curved arches either side typical of Dutch influence in architecture and antique furniture of the late 17th Century. This curved outline has been skilfully defined by a steam bent beaded edge, iron nailed along its whole length.
Overall Condition - Excellent.
Some old inactive worm to the elm drawer linings.
Period historically replaced brass ware. (No drawer scaring, original handle holes only, but there are marked grooves to the back of the drawer fronts from previous wire fixings)
Restoration work has been kind and gentle to address age related wear.
