German in origin and dating mid to late 1500s. Hand beaten on the inside with rolled rope work edges. Some of these backplates were made from a mild steel such as this example and carry less weight this piece comes in around 3.3 pounds.
The backplate came from the contents of the Wolseley Hall Estate Staffordshire. Auctioned off in the mid 1960s due to the hall being demolished.
The original paper work has long been lost but the item came directly from a lady who's family purchased it originaly. Size 14.5 inches High and 22 inches across the width of the plate. £625.00
