Description:
This is a good quality small reproduction Victorian style 11” mahogany fusee timepiece railway station wall clock, circa late 20th / early 21st century, which is in good working order, as can be seen from the photos. It is unusual to see fusee antique clocks this small.
This antique clock features a lovely mahogany case, with a moulded brass bezel, a pendulum access door on the underside and a mechanism-viewing door on the right hand side that allows you to view the mechanism whilst in operation. The mahogany case has been cleaned, including wax polishing to revive the wonderful colour and patination of the grain in the timber. This clock features a “deep dish” case design. On the back of the clock is a bracket to attach the clock to the wall.
This clock houses a top quality 8-day single brass barrel fusee timepiece mechanism. A timepiece mechanism is not designed to chime or strike. The movement has been serviced and is now in good mechanical order, ensuring this clock is reliable and keeping good time. The pendulum length, which is attached to the mechanism by accessing the clock from the door below, can be adjusted to allow you to regulate the speed of the antique clock. The clock comes with a key, which is used to wind the mechanism through the centre of the face dial.
This clock face features a painted tin dial with black Roman numerals and an elegant shaped hour and minute hand. The name “London” is also painted on the dial. However, this clock was most likely made in India, not London.
A hinged solid brass bezel houses the beveled glass face that protects the tin dial and face whilst in operation. The brass bezel opens on a right hand hinge to allow you to adjust or set the time. There is a catch to the back of the clock that locks the brass bezel in place and stops it from accidentally swinging open.
To access the clock mechanism, there are 4 tapered pegs behind the bezel, which can be removed once the hour and minute hand have been removed from the central rod.
The clock looks great in a variety of rooms and also in either a traditional or contemporary setting. This truly is a very beautiful wall clock of classic styling and quality construction. It will become a member of the family after not too long! So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely clock.
How does a fusee clock work?
This fusee clock features a cone shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a chain, which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down, preventing the clock from slowing down. This is because the force a spring exerts diminishes as the spring unwinds. As the movement runs, the tapering shape of the fusee pulley continuously changes the “mechanical advantage” of the pull from the mainspring, compensating for the diminishing spring force and allowing the mechanism to get a constant force from the mainspring.
The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle, inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel. In a fusee clock, the barrel turns the fusee by pulling on the chain, and the fusee turns the clock's gears. When the mainspring is wound up, all the chain is wrapped around the fusee from bottom to top, and the end going to the barrel comes off the narrow top end of the fusee. So, the strong pull of the wound up mainspring is applied to the small end of the fusee, and the small lever arm of the fusee radius reduces the torque on the fusee. As the clock runs, the chain is unwound from the fusee from top to bottom and wound on the barrel. As the mainspring runs down, more of the chain is wrapped on the barrel, and the chain going to the barrel comes off the wide bottom grooves of the fusee. Now the weaker pull of the mainspring is applied to the larger radius of the bottom of the fusee. The greater turning moment provided by the larger radius at the fusee compensates for the weaker force of the spring, keeping the drive torque constant. To wind the clock up again, a key is fitted to the protruding squared off axle (winding arbor) of the fusee and the fusee is turned. The pull of the fusee unwinds the chain off the barrel and back onto the fusee, turning the barrel and winding the mainspring. The presence of the fusee means that the force required to wind up the mainspring is constant it does not increase as the mainspring tightens (source: ).
Condition Report:
This clock has been sympathetically restored and polished and is now in good working order. Nominal old use marks to the mahogany case and tin dial but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The mahogany case is generally in good condition. The brass-hinged bezel is in good working order, with some play to the hinge. The bezel-locking latch is present and working and prevents the bezel from opening. The mechanism has been cleaned and serviced and is in good working order, keeping good time. As we are confident that you will have no problems with the mechanism, we offer a 2-year UK warranty whereby if there were a mechanical problem with the clock, we would collect it free of charge from you, have it repaired and returned free of charge to you. We also offer a 14-day UK returns policy if you were not happy with it or wanted to return it for any reason.
Setting up the Clock:
The clock may require the pendulum to be adjusted once on the wall. The clock will only work if it is placed on a flat wall in a direct up-right position (not on a side angle). Detailed setup instructions will be included when the clock is delivered.

This warranty policy only applies to deliveries to the UK.
