We have for sale a rather rare and decorative Rockingham porcelain dessert plate hand painted by the ceramics decorator William Landeg.
This attractive Rockingham moulded plate is decorated with 6 gilded fans to the border and a beautifully hand painted primrose against a backdrop of leaves to the centre in a manner typical of William Landeg. The plate carries the Puce Manufacturer to the King Rockingham mark c1831-1842 along with the pattern number 681 in gilt to the reverse. The plate dates to somewhere between 1831 and 1836 when Landeg died.
The plate is 9 inches (22.9cm) in diameter and is in a very good to excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs, although there is the glaze crazing one would expect in a piece of Rockingham porcelain of this period.
About the Artist
The artist William Landeg (1806-1836) was well known for designing the Rockingham Blackbery pattern and also for his decoration of dessert wares with wild flowers against a backdrop of their leaves. His style became quite popular in the mid 19th century and was copied by decorators working for other porcelain manufacturers including Minton. He is also known to have served in the Swinton malitia between 1829 and 1831.
