Victorian Doulton Lambeth Silver Rimmed Jug, 1896
Here we have a very striking late Victorian Doulton Lambeth ribbed Jug with a Sterling Silver rim. The jug was made at Doulton's Lambeth factory and hand decorated by L.F. Bowen whilst the silver rim was made in Birmingham by Spurrier & Co and dates the jug to 1896.
Founded as Jones, Watts & Doulton in Vauxhall in 1815, the firm moved to Lambeth in 1826, becoming Doulton & Co in 1854 and finally Royal Doulton in 1902. The company began producing art pottery at Lambeth around 1870 and quickly reached extraordinary levels of artistic quality.
This tall stoneware jug has the classic Doulton Lambeth colour combination of rich blues and browns. The main part of the body has a distinctive clear glazed ribbed decoration, whilst the top has roundel and leaf decoration on a brown and blue background. The top rim has a good sized Sterling Silver cover. It is perfectly usable as a water jug on a dining table, would make a great vase or looks beautiful as a purely decorative piece.
Condition is very good with no chips, cracks or other damage. There is one truly miniscule ding to the top of the silver rim near the lip but this does not detract from the beauty or functionality of the jug in any way. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug stands 23cm / 9" high and is 9.9cm / 3.8" in diameter across the base.
The marks on the base show the Doulton Lambeth stamp, the pattern number 4647 and the incised LB decorators' mark for L.F. Bowen. The hallmarks on the rim are nice and clear to read and show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the gothic date letter "w" for 1896 and the S & Co makers' mark for Spurrier & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post. Please be assured the jug will be safely and securely packaged for transit.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
