Very Fine Writing Table by Holland & Sons
A Very Fine Mid 19th Century Writing Table attributed to the important firm of Holland & Sons in the Louis XVI style favoured by Queen Victoria, the leathered top with multiple bandings in tulipwood and panelled in treillage inlaid harewood, the corners with inlaid florets, with finely cast gilt bronze mounts to the legs and drawer fronts. HISTORICAL NOTE
This prestigious firm of cabinet makers, originally founded in 1803 by William Holland & Stephen Taprell, became one of the most successful antique furniture makers of the 19th Century. They were granted the Royal Warrant early in Queen Victoria's reign and worked on many commissions for Osborne House, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral & Marlborough House. Commissions for the British Government included furniture for the Palace of Westminster, the British Museum & Royal Academy. They took part in all the important internationsl exhibitions including the Great Exhibition of 1851. Although unsigned, this superbly crafted table is typical of Holland & Sons' Louis XVI style of furniture so favoured by Queen Victoria.
