Stoneware Tobacco Jar Dated 1884.
A stoneware tobacco jar in perfect condition.
Probably made at one of the London stoneware factories, such as Lambeth or Doulton Lambeth, it is a remarkable survivor. The colour combination is very reminiscent of the drainage pipes and pots produced for the building and water industries by the London factories.
On the lid of the jar are a bottle, a goblet, a clay pipe, an ashtray and a clay pipe rest. The jar, being in the shape and design of a barrel, and with the smoking and drinking paraphernalia on it, looks as if its a table in a tavern on the banks of the Thames.
The impressed marks to the front of the jar are the date of 1884 and the owners initials of P.H.H.
On the underneath are also the initials H.H. which may be the potters mark, and possibly the potter made it for themselves.
The condition is very good, with no chips, cracks, repairs or blemishes.
It stands 6 inches or 15 cms to the top of the bottle.
UK secure packaging and tracked postage is £10.
